An international conference on the intersection of religion and literature in medieval China, focusing on the impact of Buddhism and Daoism on a wide range of elite and popular literary texts and religious practices in the 3rd-11th centuries CE. This conference will also be held in honor of one of the most influential scholars of religious Daoism working today, Professor Stephen Bokenkamp, Regents’ Professor in the School of International Letters and Cultures at Arizona State University. Professor Bokenkamp’s scholarship has been groundbreaking for bringing together the many cross-currents of religious, intellectual, and literary traditions that are usually studied separately.
