“Diaspora in Dialogue” intends to spark dialogue and conversation across the diaspora regarding our contributions to our homelands’ economies, political discourse, academia and more. Bringing in African studies scholars — Amsale Alemu, assistant professor in the Department of African Studies at Howard University, and Mojúbàolú Olúfunké Okome, professor of political science at Brooklyn College — the event hopes not to lecture, but to have an in-depth, yet accessible, conversation with scholars who have extensive knowledge about the influence of the diaspora on the social, political and economic fabric of Nigeria and Ethiopia. By reimagining both the relationship to our home countries and our unique and active positions in the diaspora, we hope to provide a roadmap for navigating how we can continue to participate in our countries’ progress and the development of the African diaspora as a whole.
