Overview
Eastern Europe’s history is marked by the influence of various empires, the Nazi and Soviet eras, and the subsequent communist regimes. Even after communism's collapse, the region's politics remain influenced by Western aspirations and lingering communist legacies, alongside Russia’s attempts to reassert its influence.
The course begins with an overview of the pre-communist and communist historical context, followed by an in-depth exploration of the political dynamics in the post-communist era. It covers the transition from one-party rule to various democratic and authoritarian regimes, debates about EU and NATO membership, energy security, and the threat of Russian aggression. While the seminar examines the broader post-communist region, it focuses on Romania and its neighbors, Ukraine and Moldova. These countries exemplify the tensions between Western and Russian influences, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Discussions will be complemented by local policy experts and guest academics. Students will also meet for language instruction twice a week. Excursions include the Romanian capital, Bucharest — where they will meet with top Romanian politicians, policy makers, diplomats, journalists and business executives — as well as a trip to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea.
